Located in the center of Al Karak Governorate, south of Amman, The castle was built during the Iron Age/ Moabite period and continued to be inhabited during the Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods.
Karak Castle is the second-largest castle in terms of area in the Middle East, consisting of seven floors or levels. Some of the most notable archaeological features of the castle include: towers, the market, the school, the Mamluk palace, the mosque, the Crusader church, a Nasirid hall, the oil press, ovens, water wells, and numerous residential buildings.
